The Importance of Present Moment Awareness

The past doesn’t define you, your present does. It’s okay to create a vision of the future

because it affects your behavior in the “now”, but don’t dwell on past mistakes.

Learn from them and focus those lessons in the moment. That’s

where change can really happen. -Jillian Michaels

How many hours do we spend in our head? We worry about the future, we dwell on past events. We are constantly stressing ourselves out about the past or the future. Neither of them exist, the past is gone and the future is not here yet.

Very rarely we are fully present. Yet the present is the only time period that is real and we are not conscious about it. The past is gone and the future is not here yet.

Everything which is done in the present, affects the future by consequence,

and the past by redemption. –Paulo Coelho

Let’s talk about The Past

  • Can you go to the past?
  • Can you get back and changed it?
  • Can we go back and prevent a mistake?

Then, ask yourself what can I do with my past?

I would say “I need to let it go!” The past it is no longer here. Accept what you can’t change.

We all have made some serious mistakes in the past, but what we do with that is totally up to us. We can learn from it, become a different person and make the decision to never repeat that mistake again.

You can never make the same mistake twice because the second time you make it,

it’s not a mistake, it’s a choice. –Steven Dinn

Do you use the past to cast yourself in a permanent victimhood state? Do you have a favorite story you repeat often to illustrate how you were victimized in the past?

Keeping yourself in this state is giving up your power and deciding to become a victim.

We can’t control the things that happen to us, but we can control the way we react to them.

I’m going to ask you something. Can you drive your car looking always from your rear-view mirror?

I think the past is like using your rear-view mirror in the car, it’s good to glance back and see how far you’ve come, but if you stare too long you’ll miss what’s right in front of you.

Life is short, live it fully, we agreed we need to stop living in the past. I know this is easier said than done, which is why we must find a way to learn from it and move on if you want to be happy. Re-create a new life for yourself. You deserve it.

No matter how hard the past was you can always begin again. -Buddha

About The Future

Let’s ask the same questions

  • Can you go to the future?
  • Can you go forward and changed it?
  • Can we go forward and skip a mistake?

Then why we obsess so much, worry and stress about it? We need to think about it for sure, set up goals in each areas of our life, family, spirituality, health, relationships, business/work, etc. absolutely, and definitively plan for our future.

But ultimately nothing will contribute to our future more than our day to day decisions. You have heard the saying: “you are the sum of your decisions”.

The future depends on what we do in the present. –Mahatma Gandhi

Some people say that the past is where you learned the lesson and the future is where you apply the lesson.

Just because the past didn’t turn out like you wanted it to, doesn’t mean your future can’t be better than you’ve ever imagined.

Learn from the mistakes you made in the past, resolve to be a different person now and make different decisions.

This will create a better future for you. A future where you are happy, healthy, prosperous and full of life.

The best way to predict your future is to create it. Abraham Lincoln

The Present

The present is a gift! It is the only time period in which we have power. Power to change who we are, make new decisions, take action and connect with love ones and close friends.

When we are in the present moment, fully aware, we start noticing the beauty of life. The amazing details of nature. We feel good, we relax, it is amazing.

When we are living in the present fully, we can go to the beach and start noticing the color of the sand, the sound of the waves, the birds, and the smell, how the water move, etc. it’s not going to the beach anymore. We connect with nature, it’s like entering in a space without time. It’s pure magic.

When we are fully present we are able to figure things out, we start being clear about who we are, who we want to be, do and have? Take the time to figure this out and connect with the present. You can have the life of your dream and be your best self, by being aware and being present.

Meditation is an amazing way to relax the body, quiet the mind, be at peace and become fully present.

Look closely at the present you are constructing: it should look like the future you are dreaming. –Alice Walker

Let’s do an exercise

Grab a paper and a pen. Go to a comfortable area, you can set soft music if you want to. Be honest and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. What kind of person am I?
  2. Am I happy with who I am now?
  3. How is my health?
  4. What do I eat and drink?
  5. Am I getting enough exercise?
  6. Am I getting enough sleep?
  7. How are my finances?
  8. Do I have savings, a plan for retirement?
  9. How are my relationships?
  10. How is my social life?
  11. Do I have any hobbies?
  12. Is my life balanced?
  13. Do I take time for myself?
  14. How am I doing in my career or business?
  15. Am I in the right one?
  16. Am I doing what I love?
  17. Am I contributing, making a difference?
  18. Do I live with integrity?
  19. Am I honest about all the above?
  20. Am I fooling myself?

This is a critical step in my coaching program. Taking the time to access your current situation and work with it.
